Day #30 Sodium Correction for Hyperglycemia Patients
In hyperglycemia patients, water moves out the cells into the extra cellular fluid causing a decrease in serum sodium concentration. In order to correct for lab values subtract the patient’s glucose level from normal (100) and multiple by 0.016 to get the corresponding correction you need to add for sodium levels. In hyperglycemia patients, giving IV fluids is critical.
